Minister of Science and Technology at official Scifest Africa opening!
6th March 2016

On Friday 4 March, the official opening of Scifest Africa 2016 was held at the 1820 Settler’s Monument. It was an auspicious occasion with varied entertainment and thought-provoking speeches.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Ms Naledi Pandor MP was in attendance at the opening, and lauded Scifest Africa for it contribution to the sciences. She applauded the festival for its ability to create excitement around science, technology and innovation. “The main purpose of Scifest is to introduce young people to the exciting world of science and technology and to encourage them to choose to be part of this community of science and innovation”, she said.

This year the theme of the festival is “A matter of time” and looks at the creation, depiction, measurement and (even) end of time. The purpose of the festival is to engage the public in interactive events that teach mathematics, engineering, science, technology and innovation in a way that creates interest in these fields for the youth.

The minister implored schools to initiate science activities that would help learners do well in maths and science. She went on to affirm this by saying that: "You, the learners present here, have time to work hard and to succeed in science technology and engineering. You live in a time in which there are immense possibilities for all young people. I hope you will use the festival to learn about science careers and to think about contributing to building a great South Africa."
