Young scientists leading the way for science
26th January 2017

Scifest Africa is proud to host three talented inventors at this year’s National Science Festival that will take place in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape from 8-14 March.

Visitors to the festival have a chance to meet the 2016 Eskom Expo for Young Scientists winners, Bianka Reyneke, Andrea Blignaut and Charles Murray Hofmeyr, who will be giving lectures about their fantastic work.

In a lecture titled, I found the link, Welkom Gimnasium Secondary School learner, Bianka Reyneke explores how the development of perceptual motor abilities is key in processing sensory information in preschoolers. Using information from a study that was conducted between 2005-2015, Reyneke explores the link between perceptual motor ability in preschool and its effect on school performance in high school.

With this year’s festival exploring the theme "Tour de Science," with reference to the UN declared International Year for Sustainable Tourism for Development, Woodhill College learners Andrea Blignaut and Charles Murray Hofmeyr have found a safe way to journey deep into the earth’s core to save lives.

In a lecture titled Robot designed to access terrain inaccessible to humans, Blignaut and Hofmeyr explore their development of a robot to use for rescue missions in mining disasters. This robot would need to be capable of being sent into the disaster area, record the area and come out unharmed, but not be an extraordinary loss if something were to happen to it.

The festival, supported by the Department of Science and Technology, promises fun and new experiences for everyone so lookout for the electronic programme available on our Festival page from 6 February 2017.
