Scifest Africa and The South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) call for entries for the Astrophotography and Astro-art Competition in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the SAAO. The winning images will be included in an exhibition forming part of the display in the new SAAO Cape Town Visitors Centre opening in March 2021

This open submission competition calls for entries on the theme of the Southern Hemisphere in the following categories:

  • Deep Sky : Photographs of objects outside our solar system including nebulae, star clusters and galaxies
  • Shallow Sky: Photographs of our solar system and atmosphere including planetary conjunctions, solar and lunar eclipses
  • Planets: Photographs of objects in our solar system, including planets and their satellites, comets, asteroids and other forms of zodiacal debris
  • Moon : Photographs of our Moon, including lunar eclipses and the occultation of stars and planets
  • Milky Way: Photographs of deep-space objects in the Milky Way galaxy, including stars, star clusters, supernova remnants, nebulae and other galactic phenomena
  • Constellations: photographs of the patterns within the milky way
  • Astrophotography Junior: Open to learners with a cell phone to submit a photo or short time-lapse video of the Southern Night Sky
  • Astro Art: Freeform category open for the submission of drawings, paintings and digital art created in any of the above categories

The Junior Astro-Photography and Astro-Art Competition has been extended to Friday 20 November, with three prizes up for grabs courtesy of the South African Astronomical Observatory. Both categories are reserved for learners.
