OUR 25th EDITION OF SCIFEST AFRICA!

Our 2021 – 2022 edition of Scifest Africa marks our Silver Jubilee. 25 years of science engagement, and the promotion of Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Innovation for the people of South Africa.

Scifest Africa was the first Festival of its kind on the African continent and was launched in 1996 as a high profile, national event to promote a culture of science in a festive way. In our first year we welcomed 10,000 visitors. 25 years later, we have hosted 100,000s of speakers and over a million visitors throughout the years – including world class scientists and Nobel laureates.

Scifest Africa’s goal has been to present science in a fun way without using its authenticity – taking science to non-scientists without watering down the meaning. Our festival has not only helped to promote science to learners, but also to allow the science community to engage with one another, and most importantly to introduce science to our innovative communities to help fix everyday problems.

“The 25-year milestone is a great symbol of local and international collaboration. Scifest Africa is a product of collaborative work – we are grateful to our valuable sponsors, partners and contributors, thus individuals and institutions that have dedicated themselves to joining us in promoting the public awareness, appreciation and understanding of STEMI. At 25, we are given an opportunity to reflect on the past 25 years with a deliberate intention to draw lessons from experience which could prove valuable in crafting a bright future for Scifest Africa and Science Engagement in the country and continent.”

What’s on

Join Scifest manager Fredy Mashate in conversation with Brian Wilmot – the Founding Director of Scifest Africa – as they take a trip down memory lane through 25 years of our history in search of the big ideas at the inception of our festival. We relive the past triumphs and laments as recalled by Brian but also look into the future in search of what could become in hopes and aspirations.

As part of our 25 year celebrations, we’ve had a stream of messages from those that have played a part in our success and continuation of the promotion of science over the years.
